Piano Man
The Billy Joel Newsletter published an article about the bar on which Piano Man is based. It was torn down in the 1980s but in 1972 it looked something like this:
Billy Joel, who turned sixty-five last week, that's right, 65, has long said all the characters in the song are real people from that bar. What a kick in the head it would be to have seen him play for tips in the Executive Room!
It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Making love to his tonic and gin
He says, "Son can you play me a memory
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet
And I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes"
Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright
Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be
He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me"
As a smile ran away from his face
"Well, I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place"
Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talking with Davy, who's still in the Navy
And probably will be for life
And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinking alone
Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright
It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been coming to see
To forget about life for a while
And the piano sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say "Man what are you doing here?"
Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright.
Mother's Day
Love You, Mamacita!
I love this photo of Mom for so many reasons: the navy blue windbreaker that matched Dad's, the navy blue yarn ribbon in her hair, the fact that you're not sure if she's about to holler at me to get out of the street or burst out laughing.
Bloodlines
A spin off.
Now it really comes down to it.
Is it the writing and the stories and the mythology?
Or is it the magic of Jensen and Jared on the screen together?
I guess we'll find out.

My Symphony
My Symphony
To live content with small means;
to seek elegance rather than luxury, and
refinement rather than fashion; to be
worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich;
to study hard, think quietly, talk gently,
act frankly, to listen to stars and birds,
babes and sages, with open heart, to
bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await
occasions, hurry never; in a word
to let the spiritual, unbidden and
unconscious, grow up through the common
this is to be my symphony.
The Hanging of the Crane
Oh fortunate, O happy day,
When a new household finds its place
Among the myriad homes of earth,
Like a new star just sprung to birth,
And rolled on its harmonious way
Into the boundless realms of space!
